Things to consider when travelling with your pet.
With a little planning, travelling with your pet can be a breeze. Here are some pointers to get you started.
If your pet requires medication, make sure you have extra on hand so you don't run out when it's needed. It's also a good idea to keep your veterinarian's contact information on hand in case you misplace the medication, so the physician can call in a prescription if the other is misplaced.
Check ahead of time to see if the hotel you're booking will allow pets. You don't want to presume that a pet friendly hotel exists in a town you intend to visit only to be turned away because you have a pet or to find that the ones that do welcome pets are all filled up when you arrive.
Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with identification tags. One tag should be a current rabies tag, while the other should have the dog's name, your name, address, city, state, and phone number. Add your cell phone number on the ID tag if you have one. It also wouldn't hurt to have a microchip installed. This is a far more trustworthy method of identification.
Bring your pet's food dishes, bed or cushion, and a few favourite toys with you. Bringing along familiar items can help reduce travel stress and make the trip more pleasurable for both you and your animal.
Stopping for fitness breaks should be done regularly. In a car, a well-exercised animal will sleep and not be all over the place. The majority of motorway rest spots feature areas where you can walk your dog. Make sure to follow the rules and clean up after your pet. In the future, common decency will ensure that the facilities will welcome pets.
